If you can't beat'em, join'em

On Sunday Brian and I gave into the snow. We had tried to push our bikes across it, hike our bikes over it, and ride our bikes through it. But eventually we had to just give in...

Sunday morning we headed over to a ski rental shop and picked out a lime green disc, and a bright orange sled. Brian was embarrassed to be buying sleds in May at Tahoe, but I didn't care. And truthfully, neither did the clerk. He yawned at us, and didn't say a word. I think he was bummed to be at work and missing the last ski weekend of the season. Our next adventure was trying to find a place to sled. May is the off season for winter sports. The snow was there blocking the bike trails, but we needed hills of snow, not melty patches of it. We headed to Hope Valley, but there was no hope and no snow. Feeling like sledding might end up like one of our disappointed bike rides, we headed back over the pass dejected, and decided to stop at the grass lake trailhead. Across the highway was the beginning of Mr. Toads trail, and we knew there was a small patch of snow at the begining of the trail, and it would have to do.

But once we got out of the car at Grass Lake, we spied snow through the trees. Lots and lots of snow. And more importantly, lots of hills covered with snow! Yes! We grabbed the sleds, and hiked through the woods, all set to rock the world of downhill sledding.
REI guy. "Out is the new in."
What goes down...
must go back up.
It has been awhile since I was on a sled. Slippery little things...
Oh geez...this thing doesn't steer very well.
Ouch.
This is my highly proven method of stopping the sled by using a tree.
Pretty soon even mother nature got into the act by providing us with some snow. It's surreal to be sledding in May while it's snowing. We sledded for about two hours before packing it up and heading home. With bruised butts, tired legs and wet mittens; I'd say our sledding mission was a huge success.
Monday morning
I always like to try new trails. Unfortunatley Monday mornings pick was not so great. An out and back fireroad, rutted, with a gradual climb. It was one of those roads that just suck the energy right out of you.
The only redeeming quality about this ride was the beautiful scenery. But even the snow capped mountains of Tahoe couldn't hold our attention for that long, so after two miles of slogging it out on this cruddy trail, we turned around and headed back to the car.

Back to Corral Trail
Back to the "bermy, swoopy, wheeee! It's all downhill from here, baby!" trail. I love Corral Trail, I hate the climb up to it. Today was a very good day though, because today it was all about the rocks. I rocked the rocks!
My first attempt down, not so good.
Feet are for pedaling, not walking the bike downhill.
Feet...on...pedals! But, no.
Bummer. That sucked. Let's try again.
Feet on pedals? Check. Butt back? check.
And down we go!
Yes! That's more like it.
Brian gets rad!
Rocks and a log...
I think I'll take the rocks.
Brian takes the log.
It was a great day to ride. This has been a good vacation despite the snow! Tomorrow Powerline trail...finally!
