What goes up, usually goes down

unless you were at Fort Ord this weekend, racing the cross country course where all laws of physics, geography and topography were broken as CCCX produced a course that was 90% uphill.

My race went pretty much the same as most of my races; I got dropped early on, my legs hurt, my lungs hurt, and right around the middle of the 2nd lap I started praying for a mechanical. By the time I crossed the finish line, I swore I wouldn't do another race, and by the time I got to the car I was already planning on what I was going to do differently next time. That's typical.

What made this course so tough was THE HILL. They put a hill right after the nicest bit of downhill singletrack. So you're cruising along, swooping down the course, feeling really good about yourself and BAM, there's Mt.Everest right in front of you. I climbed it twice, then had to walk it twice. And no. There was no sick downhill at the top to make up for this dirt monstrosity.

The rest of the course was a mixture of road (sigh) and the packed single track that Fort Ord is famous for. I placed 10 out of 12, if that's important to those who keep track. One of the best parts of the race was riding again with one of the girls who showed up for my velogirls beginner rides last summer. How cool to see her out on the course, kicking my butt on her bike.

Next race is March 3rd.
Racing is hard work. And it's not exactly what I would call fun, but I sure do I love being on my bike.

Good action shots! You should send the third one from the top to staff picks. I'm glad you're back on the race course.
