Natural Talent

Guitar lesson today, and I haven't practiced in two weeks. I wish I could rely on natural talent to get me through. However, since the only natural thing about me is my "naturally curly hair", it's going to be a very, very long lesson. We have a lot of musically talented people at my library. Three clerks who can play music by ear and play in a band, and two librarians who sing in a choir. Then there is me. Forbidden by Judith to sing in public at any time, anywhere. I would be insulted, but she's just doing the ears of the world a huge kindness. I may not be able to carry a note in a bucket, however you ought to hear me play the first few chords of "Wild Thing". Five months of guitar lessons, and that is still the only thing I can play. Sometimes, if I'm really good it almost sounds like "Louie, Louie."

So I'm no huge musical talent. You ought to check me on my mountain bike. Well, truthfully, I'm not so great on the bike either. Last bike race I did, I was beaten by a woman who had been mountain biking for only two months, and was riding a bike that didn't fit her. So scratch natural athletic ability off my list. I have to work hard to suck as much as I do!

So what am I good at?

I can read really, really fast. I can easily finish a book in a couple of hours if the story is at all good. So reading really fast. That's my natural talent.

Right. That's so sad.

I think I'm going to go practice my guitar now.

You're very artistic and make spectacular flannel boards Lizzie. Don't forget to add very well organized -- now that's a talent I'd wish to possess. It's really kinda dead here at work with no one fun to play with. Keep plucking, maybe we can come up with a hit like "Victor Vito..."
