I love my bike

I caught myself looking up trails around San Luis Opisbo to see if there is anywhere fun to ride during Wildflower weekend. My husband, who remembers the huge DRAMA of Wildflower last year, couldn't believe I was considering mountain biking during tri weekend.

"Last year you made me sit in the hotel for an entire day so you could rest, and this year you want to go mountain biking?!"

Well, perhaps not.

He' s already made me promise that we won't get to Wildflower 5 hours early Sunday morning. He wants that in writing. And while I'm packing up wetsuit, goggles, and bike gear; he's packing laptop, DVD, books, and sunscreen. And I know for darn sure I'm packing him his own cooler of food!

Wildflower training is coming along nicely. Judith is forcing me against my will to go swimming at Quarry Lakes on Monday. I tried to convince her I needed to go for a bike ride instead, but she is VERY persistent. I hate swimming at Quarry Lakes. The swim lane is crooked, the water is choppy and there are no fish. Of course if I'm the one driving, then she can't say a word if we end up at Shadowcliffs instead.

And as you all know I've been thinking about training diligently for Wildflower for quite awhile now. This morning I added the final element to my training plan and I know it's going to play a huge factor in the outcome of my race. Last year there was a bit of an upset at the Santa Cruz Mermaid tri. I was humiliated by my arch nemesis; beaten by mere seconds By SHE WHO WILL REMAINED UN-NAMED. Ever since, I've been haunted by that failure. However, thanks to modern technology I can safely say "Never again!" This week I commited to elastic laces in my biking and running shoes.

Never again will I ride out of transistion and have to stop to retie my shoes.

Last May, Wildflower was my first triathlon-race-sporting event ever in my entire life. I can't believe how much has happened over a course of year! Since last May I did my first triathlon, first running, first cyclocross, and first cross country mountain bike race.

So for the past couple of years on my birthday I've been trying to do things I've never done before. A couple of years ago I ran my first ten miles. Last year I did a triathalon. This year I was planning on doing a downhill mountain bike race, but I'm not quite ready for that yet. So I'm taking suggestions. Anybody have any good ideas on what I can do to celebrate? I'm up for almost anything.

Me and my brother. Back in my wee little blonde pre curly gurl days my brother used to empty out my toy chest and put me inside. He'd closed the lid and tell me to stay there. He thought it was a great game. My mother was less than pleased.

Lizzie, you wanted to go BIKING Monday. I think you have "trained" enough on wheels! Hello! Don't blame me (or the organizers of Wildflower) if they find you at the bottom of the lake! I'm just trying to give you a more "balanced training" albeit against your will. Since you think we're not going to Quarry Lakes, I think I'll drive on Monday.

Dearest Mary-Kate, I insist on driving Monday. I REALLY do. :) In fact, if we go to Shadowcliffs I can practice my brick workout, and we can both do a run on the trails. Won't that be fun? :) Plus-McDonalds.
